The short version
Lavender is central Singapore without the polished surface. Older flats, shophouses, small workshops, hostels, temples and new apartments gather around Lavender Street and the roads towards Jalan Besar. It is a practical base for people who want to be close to town and do not need a quiet estate or a branded retail district.
The useful roughness
The district’s interest lies in its mixture. Jalan Besar is a mixed use neighbourhood of residential, commercial and light industrial buildings, and parts of Little India reach into the area. The streets around Tyrwhitt Road, Hamilton Road and Foch Road change quickly from shopfronts to housing. That makes a walking route useful, but it also means the same postcode can describe very different homes.
Lavender MRT is the obvious anchor, while City Square Mall and the services around Kitchener Road help on the northern side. A unit beside a main road gets the benefit of movement and food. A side street may be calmer, though old buildings can bring ventilation, loading and sound questions that newer towers hide.
Who fits here?
Lavender suits singles and couples who prefer an active street to a landscaped compound. It can work for families who are happy with compact housing and a central routine, but the area is not designed around large estate play spaces. The social mix is broad, and a newcomer can remain independent rather than joining one expatriate scene.

Yes, if I wanted an affordable-feeling central address and liked the street life. I would choose the block more carefully than the district, with particular attention to windows facing Lavender Street or a service lane. Lavender is not pretty in one consistent way.
