Penang Port lists the Butterworth ferry’s daily service from 6:30am to 11pm, with 20 minute peak intervals.
The ferry can make George Town accessible without taking a car across the bridge. It does not remove the need to reach the terminal, wait, cross and continue on the island. Check the return trip after work and the lighting on the walk home. For mainland errands, local buses and e hailing can help, but a car remains useful for family travel.
What it costs to live here
No defensible current one bedroom or three bedroom rent range was found for Bagan Luar. The research contains no area specific comparable sample. A home close to the ferry may be older, smaller or differently maintained than a newer unit farther out, so inspect the actual building and ask about parking, flood drainage and repairs.

Bagan Luar is sometimes flattened into the phrase near Penang Sentral. That describes the transport advantage but not the housing experience. An older neighbourhood may offer local shops and short connections while lacking new lifts, generous parking or managed public space.
The other mistake is treating the ferry as a tourist ride rather than a commute. The crossing is short, but queues, feeder trips and the final island connection still count. Travel it at your normal work time before signing.
Would I live here?
I would consider Bagan Luar for a mainland base with frequent ferry use, especially if I found a well maintained home with secure parking or an easy terminal route. I would not sign without an evening walk and a building inspection. The area is practical and connected, but the exact street matters more than the broad Butterworth label.
